F/O John Lowrie, RNZAF, was the captain of Lancaster B.I L7567 of 49 Squadron, RAF. The aircraft had left its base, RAF Scampton, at 21.11 hrs on 28th August, 1942, for an air operation to Nürnberg, Germany. On this Friday night, the squadron had 10 Lancasters airborne by 21.30hrs all on their way to the German industrial town. Over Nürnberg, Pathfinders used 'target indicators' for the first time, to mark the aiming point. Approaching from the south, the squadron's crews were able to make fixes from the river, canal and autobahn which were clearly visible in the bright moonlight. Nürnberg received only moderate damage despite the accuracy of the markers. From the 159 aircraft dispatched, 23 were reported missing - 14 Wellingtons, 4 Lancasters, 3 Stirlings and 2 Halifaxes.
F/O John Lowrie RNZAF (L7567) and crew were caught by a night fighter over Holland and were shot down just after midnight at 00.10 hrs, Saturday morning, the 29th August, 1942. The aircraft crashed at Maasbracht, 6 miles from Roermond; sadly, five of the crew were killed and are buried in a collective grave (grave IV.C.10) here in Mook.
F/O John Lowrie, RNZAF
Sgt Reginald Patrick Dobson, RAAF
Sgt Eric Albert Berrett, RAF
F/S Norman Rae Mitchell, RCAF
Sgt William Dudley Peirce, RAAF
Sgt J. Allen, RAF, and Sgt G.H.M. Gordon, RAF, were initially reported as missing, but later confirmed as being taken prisoner.
The Lancaster of F/O Lowrie and R5897 of F/S E. G. Burton were the first Lancasters to be lost by 49 Squadron.
