At 01.30 hrs, in the early morning of the 9th July, 1942, Wellington B.III X3557, of 75 (New Zealand) Squadron from RAF Feltwell, crashed into the Waddensea off the island of Rottumeroog. Captain P/O Trevor Harry Smith and his all-RNZAF crew were on a bombing sortie to Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
There were no survivors. Initially, P/O Smith was buried at Rottumeroog, but later he was laid to rest here in Oldebroek General Cemetery. The grave of Sgt George Anthony Young, RNZAF, is in Vredenhof Cemetery on the island of Schiermonnikoog.
The other 4 crew members have no known grave. They are commemorated on the walls of the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey:

Sgt Pine Tenga Takarangi, RNZAF, was the wireless operator / air gunner in the crew of 10 Squadron Whitley V Z6478/'ZA-S' from RAF Leeming. The Whitley took of at 19.49 hrs for a bombing mission to Hüls in Germany. The aircraft was intercepted by a German night fighter and was shot down soon afterwards. Z6478 crashed near Oldebroek on a Wehrmacht artillery gunnery range. The entire crew perished and were buried here in Oldebroek General Cemetery.
