Lancaster LL955/'ZN-E' of 106 Squadron, RAF had left its base, RAF Metheringham, at 23.10 hrs on 21st June, 1944. The bomber had been tasked for a sortie to the synthetic oil-plants of Scholven-Buer. At some stage in the mission, the Lancaster of P/O James Brodie was attacked by a night fighter. LL955 came down near the village of Oosterwolde at around 02.32 hrs in the morning of the 22nd June, 1944. There were no survivors.

In November/December 1996 a RNethAF salvage team cleared wreckage of LL955 from the field in which the aircraft came down, after fragments and ammunition had been found.
