At 23.30 hrs, on the 22th June, 1943, Stirling BK656/'LS-A' of 15 Squadron left RAF Mildenhall for a bombing mission to Mülheim, Germany. At some stage in the flight, the Stirling was attacked by a night fighter and crashed at around 02.07 hrs in the morning of June 23rd, near Otterlo in the Hoge Veluwe National Park. The entire crew was killed. All are buried here in Ede.

According to 'Luftwaffe Night Fighter Claims 1939-1945', the Stirling fell victim to Hauptmann Wilhelm Dormann of 9./NJG 1, who claimed a Stirling at 02.07 hrs, 5 kilometres to the South-west of the village of Hoenderloo.

F/S Hilton Arthur Lister was air gunner in the crew of F/S David Lawson Wallace, RAAF. Their aircraft, Lancaster B.I W4943 of 156 Squadron, RAF, had left its base at RAF Warboys at 23.12 hrs in the night of 27th May, 1943, for a bombing operation to the city of Essen, Germany.
At some stage in the flight, the Lancaster was intercepted and attacked by a Luftwaffe night fighter aircraft. The Lancaster crashed at Otterlo, 10 kilometres to the North-east of Ede.
Of the crew, 4 airmen managed to escape the stricken aircraft before it impacted close to the Karweg, Otterlo. They were made prisoner: Sgt T.H. Harvey, RAF; Sgt R.J. Twinn, RAF; Sgt R.J. Jackson, RAF and Sgt W.H.G.I. Moore, RAF.
