On 16 December, 1942, P/O F.S. Millen's Stirling I R9168/LS-T of No.15 Squadron had left RAF Bourn for a bombing operation to the Luftwaffe aircraft depot at Diepholz, Germany. On the way to the target, the aircraft was engaged by flak and attacked by a Luftwaffe night fighter. At 20.09 hrs the Stirling crashed in pine woodland Het Veen near Gortel, some 7 kilometres SouthWest of Epe. Only tail gunner Sgt James F. Perring survived. He was mad PoW. His fellow crew members all rest here at the Algemene Begraafplaats:

The loss of this Stirling was claimed by crews of 1. and 2./Schw. Flak Abt. 42 Mot and 1./lei. Flak Abt.743 as well as Lt Werner Rapp of 7./NJG 1, near Barchem, 12 kilometres North of Apeldoorn in Raum 4C. (NCA The Early Years, 1942, Part3, p.116).

Lancaster III LM581/AS-X of P/O Trevor Boyce, RNZAF, took off at 22.38 hours from RAF Kirmington. No.166 Squadron had been detailed for a raid to Gelsenkirchen, Germany. On their return from the target, they were attacked by a Luftwaffe night fighter. The Lancaster came down near Tongeren, 4 kilometres to the West of Epe. There were no survivors. P/O Boyce and his crew rest here at the Algemene Begraafplaats.

Hauptmann Gerhard Friedrich of 1./NJG 6 claimed a Lancaster flying at a height of 4.100 metres, NorthNorthEast of Deelen at 01.25 hours. According to the Nachtjagd Combat Archive 1944, Part3, p56, his claim could either be the loss of P/O Boyce's Lancaster or Lancaster ND399, also from No.166 Squadron. This aircraft, captained by P/O John Stanley Kirton came down near Asseln, 7 kilometres to the West of Apeldoorn. All seven crew perished. They were buried at the Algemene Begraafplaats at Ugchelen, just South of Apeldoorn.
