At 23.37 hrs on 22 June 1943, Stirling I EF399, code 'AA-O' of No.75 (NZ) Squadron left RAF Newmarket for an air operation to Mülheim, in the Ruhrgebiet, Germany. At 02.25 a w/t message from this aircraft was received in which heavy damage to the aircraft by flak was reported. Not very long after this message, the Stirling was attacked by a Luftwaffe nightfighter. The Stirling came down in a field near the Traasweg, Markelo at 02.47 hrs in the early morning of 23 June 1943. There were no survivors. The crew of EF399 was buried here at the algemene Begraafplaats.

Stirling EF399 was claimed by Hptm E. Prinz zur Lippe-Weissenfeld of the Stab of III./NJG1, who attacked the aircraft at 02.47 hrs, 2 kilometres South of Markelo and to the North-East of Lochem at a height of 4.300 metres.
