William Gibbs Abbott
On 9 September 1944, W/O Abbott of No.19 Squadron, RAF, was, together with P/O M.H. Bell (RAAF) tasked to carry out an armed reconnaissance in the Arnhem-Zwolle area. During an attack on trains South of Apeldoorn, they were hit by flak. Both aircraft came down and Abbott and Bell were killed. W/O Abbott was buried here at the Oude Begraafplaats at Zutphen. P/O Maxwell Herring Bell's Mustang FX887 crashed near Hall, to the NorthNorthEast of Eerbeek. Bell was laid to rest at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery.
