In the night of 2/3 July 1942, Sgt Dunn, RAAF, and his fellow crew members had been detailed for a bomber operation to Bremen, Germany. At 23.43 hrs the Wellington II, Z8579/PH-V, of No.12 Squadron took off from RAF Binbrook, Lincolnshire.
At around 02.49 hrs, the Wellington was intercepted by a nightfighter and attacked. The Wellington came down in a field near a farm at the Ampsenseweg, North of Lochem. Sadly only two members of the crew survived: F/S K.W. Hawkins and Sgt S. Morris were made PoW.
Sgt Geoffrey Hugh Butler-Williams, Sgt I.C. Dunn and Sgt D. Evans were buried here at the Barchem General Cemetery.

The loss of this Wellington was claimed by Lt August Geiger of 8./NJG 1, near Barchem, 2 kilometres NW of Lochem in Raum 4A. (NCA The Early Years, 1942, Part3, p.44). Barchem lies approximately 4 kilometres South East of Lochem.
