In the early morning of 13 June 1943, the Lancaster III ED584, code EA-U, of 49 Squadron from RAF Fiskerton, came down in a field close to the Bloemenkampsweg at the junction of the Hellendoornseweg near the village of Mariënheem near Raalte. There were no survivors. Five crew members were buried at the Algemene Begraafplaats at Raalte. Sgt Workman was the Lancaster's tail gunner. Two crew, pilot and captain Sgt J. Hutchison and Sgt E.H. Pearson are still listed as missing. The are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

The loss of this Lancaster was attributed to Oblt August Geiger of 7./NJG 1. He claimed a Lancaster at 02.37 hrs at Luttenberg, 7 kilometres EastNorthEast of Raalte. The lancaster was also claimed by the Flak Abteilungen 324 and 443. On 20 December 1944, the Abschuss was confirmed and attributed to Oblt Geiger.
